What is a night guard? How should a nightguard fit?

Night guards are popular treatments for sleep bruxism. Night guards cushion your teeth from the force of clenching and prevent the teeth from grinding together, preventing headaches, damaged teeth, and inflamed gums. A night guard should fit snug against your teeth but not so tight that you are worried about tooth movement. It is not unusual for a little tenderness immediately after use but this should be relieved throughout the day and not be prolonged pain. If you do have pain while wearing your night guard stop using the night guard and schedule a visit with your dentist as it’s not unusual and most likely needs adjustments to relieve those pressure spots. You should keep your night guard in for the full duration of your sleep. You’re also only able to drink water with your night guard. Your night guard is clear and resembles an Invisalign tray so you must ensure not to get any foods or drinks besides water on it. Do not eat any other food or beverages with your night guard as it can cause staining and discoloration. Your night guard should not be easily removed by you at night while sleeping. If your night guard is not in your mouth then it’s not helping you so always remember at night to keep it in!

Contact your local dentist if you are suffering from sleep bruxism.
